ITMO University Participates in IRMMW-THz 2015 in Hong Kong
ITMO University was represented by a team of scientists and international relations professionals. Professor Sergei Kozlov, co-head of ITMO’s International Institute “Photonics and Optical Information Technology,” delivered a keynote lecture titled “Nonlinear Refractive Index for Crystals at Terahertz Frequencies.” Dr. Elizaveta Buyanovskaya made a poster presentation titled “Harmonic generation by a terahertz pulse in a thin nonlinear layer on a metal mirror.”Yaroslav Grachev, a post-graduate student of the Department of Photonics and Optical Information, presented on “Data transfer by spectral encoding method with high-power pulsed terahertz source.”
Commenting on the importance of terahertz research to ITMO University, Professor Kozlov said: “Our first in St. Petersburg pulsed terahertz laboratory was started in 1999. Today ITMO is home to one of the best and largest teams of engineers, scientists and researchers, specializing in this subject. We have 27 staff members. We continue to study various aspects of terahertz waves, including quantum terahertz imaging, and are currently working on the first in Russia quantum network - great work of our international institute, and our young scientists!”
He also noted that for the past three years, the International Institute of Photonics and Optical Information Technology has been under joint leadership with Professor Xi-Cheng Zhang of University of Rochester, USA, who has been instrumental in helping the Institute advance its research in the international arena.
“Together we are working on several projects in optics, photonics, and quantum communications,” Professor Kozlov said.
On August 24, ITMO University welcomed the conference participants at a special reception themed “From St. Petersburg to Hong Kong,” offering a taste of Russian culture, great views and new friendships. The guests were welcomed by Dr. Daria Kozlova, head of ITMO’s Institute of International Development and Partnership, who shared a few facts about university’s history and experiencein optics and photonics research as well as its current achievements.
“We’re very excited to be part of the global optics and photonics community and participate in research that transcends borders,” she commented.
Dr. Kozlova also noted that ITMO University together with Moscow State University is applying to host IRMMW-THz 2019 in St. Petersburg.
“We’re competing with Paris and other top destinations. It’s notable that by the number of delegates to this year’s conference, Russia was only behind China and Japan. It shows our level of commitment to the event. We’re hoping for a positive decision for St. Petersburg, and our team and me personally will be happy to welcome you in the city of white nights,” said Mrs. Kozlova.
